I visited Ysgol Bae Baglan on Saturday evening for the opening of their new school theatre. The theatre has been named ‘The Michael Sheen Theatre’ to celebrate Michael’s contribution to acting and drama since leaving Glan Afan school in Port Talbot.
On the evening we witnessed excellent performances from high profile stars and students alike, with performances from Michael Sheen, Di Botcher, Mal Pope, Raie Copp Academy, Matthew Rees, Angela V John, Matthew Aubry, Rosie Sheehy, Penclawdd Brass Band, West Glamorgan Youth Brass Band and of course the school pupils themselves who performed an extract from’ Lord of the Flies’ and their up-coming musical ‘Les Miserables’.
The event also doubled to fundraise for the school drama department, and over £2000 was raised for this cause, along with over £1200 for the Ellie’s SDR Journey – thanks to a generous donation of £1000 from Michael Sheen during the auction, and the sale of raffle tickets.
The pupils and staff have achieved so much in the seven weeks the school has been open, It was an excellent evening of entertainment and a great start to a new era of drama at Bae Baglan, I look forward to returning to see more performances at the theatre in future.
